Sacrum Profanum is a festival presenting music from the XX century, which has obtained the status of one of the most interesting music events in Europe. It's rank is built upon the participation of the most valued groups performing modern music, among others, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Klangforum Wien, Theatre of Voices, Asko | Schönberg, London Sinfonietta, musikFabrik. Sacrum Profanum also combines classical music with other trends, therefore, the presence of leading performers of Polish jazz at the festival (Tomasz Stańko, Leszek Możdżer), and stars like Aphex Twin and the group Kraftwerk.
The 2011 festival featured 4 projects: “Modern Classic”, which showcased the music of Steve Reich and friends (John Adams, Terry Riley, David Lang, Julia Wolf and Michael Gordon); “Made in Poland – Miłosz Sounds”, which featured new works by five renowned composers of the younger generation in Poland (Paweł Mykietyn, Agata Zubel, Jagoda Szmytka, Aleksandra Gryka and Wojciech Ziemowit Zych) in masterful interpretations by some of the foremost groups specializing in performance of contemporary music (including the Ensemble Modern, Alarm Will Sound and Bang on a Can All-Stars); “Debiuts” dedicated to young groups emerging on the scene (Amadrums); and “Freak”, which, in accordance with tradition, took place in the Electrolytic Tinning Plant of ArcelorMittal Poland, and which from next year will signal a new chapter in the development of the festival.
The meeting between Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood and Steve Reich was an unprecedented event at the festival. This represents a deepening of the commitment that has driven the festival for years now – the blurring of the boundary between classical and popular music. Sacrum Profanum has become a place where artists representing pop culture reach out to the “classics”. And that is only the beginning. And what, you ask, will be the finale? You’ll fall out of your seats.
