Saagara is a Polish-Indo music project formed by Wacław Zimpel and outstanding Indian musicians of the younger generation: Giridhar Udupa, Bharghava Halambi, Mysore N. Karthik and K Raja who are based in Bangalore, but perform all over the world at the most prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall or the Sydney Opera House. The project combines the European music tradition with the oldest musical form of India: Carnatic music, which is based on very sophisticated rhythmic and melodic systems. In November 2015 the band recorded their debut album Saagara released by the MultiKulti label. The premiere of the album was combined with a concert tour which took the musicians to several cities in Poland and Ukraine. In December 2016 Saagara played a series of concerts in India and entered the studio in Bangalore to record the material for another album titled 2. The album premiered on 27th February 2017 during the band's concert at the National Audiovisual Institute in Warsaw. The sound of the band on the album, produced by the Berlin producer Mooryc, has been extended to electronic instruments and samples. Wacław Zimpel said:
I wanted to create a material in which the Hindu sound would be subordinated to the logic of western forms, thus reversing the situation in a way. Saagara's first album was for me a very big step towards the Carnatic tradition, which I find totally fascinatating. But in the end I came to terms with the fact that I would never be an Indian classical musician and decided to pull the Saagara's musicians over to the Western side. I wanted to find our original sound outside the 'world music' box. Saagara's musicians had a very creative approach to processing my ideas and put enormous energy into recording the album. We created a kind of symbiosis with each other.
