The Flagey arts centre in Brussels presented Poland’s best traditional folk music in a concert featuring the Warsaw Village Band and the Bester Quartet
The “Roots to the Future” aimed to provide audiences with the most popular Polish folk bands whose compositions and pieces are based heavily on traditional music from the country’s highlands or rooted in the traditions of Jewish Klezmer music.
The Warsaw Village Band is known the world over for their electric and explosive energy on stage and is the most prominent among Polish traditional music artists abroad. The band was founded over ten years by young people with punk roots and attitude to prevent local tunes from vanishing and to popularise the small villages legacies before they could be totally forgotten. The band has also garnered laud from around the globe for promoting local handicrafts and art works so connected to their identities, contributing to the fulfillment of their mission to reject the ‘mass market’ of the music industry.
The Bester Quartet (previously known as the Cracow Klezmer Band) is, from their beginning connected to John Zorn's New York based label “Tzadik” and their mission of promoting “radical Jewish culture”. Their music is highly respected for it its ability to bring klezmer music together with contemporary chamber, classical, jazz and elements of improvisation.
