"Polish Films in English" cycle presented at the Alchemia Cinema in Old Town is intended for foreigners, those learning English and anybody who is hungry for a good Polish production
Every Monday the cinema shows Polish movies with English subtitles. There is a diverse selection of movies shown. A classic one and the newest ones, comedies and dramas, movies by the greatest Polish directors. Once a month there is a special show prepared by one of Warsaw schools of Polish for foreigners. Before the movie there is a short introduction and after the show guests can discuss about the movie in Polish or in English.

14 Nov 2011 at 19:00 - "Pętla" / "The Noose", dir. Wojciech Has, Hieronim Przybył, Poland 1957, 96 min. A film adaptation of Marek Hłasko's short story constitutes an ascetic, merciless study of a man's fall caused by his alcohol addiction. The story goes on for one day, following the main protagonist Kuba who is desperately trying to kick his drinking habit. In this he's helped by his girlfriend Krysia who stays by his side despite past disappointments, trying to make a life for them both. Now Kuba needs to stay away from the bottle long enough for Krysia to come back from work so they can both go to the clinic. But the time spent in solitude seems to drag by, and waiting becomes more difficult by the hour. Left to his own devices, Kuba obsessively thinks about his addiction.
21 Nov 2011 at 19:00 - "Wszystko co kocham" / "All That I Love", dir. Jacek Borcuch, Poland 2009, 95 min. It’s a beautiful summer in1981 by the seaside in a Polish town. The 18-year-old Janek, son of a navy officer, sets up a punk rock band to scream at the top of his voice about all the things close to his heart. Music and his first love Basia fill his life but nothing ever lasts. The Solidarity movement is fighting for freedom and democracy, the mounting tension in the country is palpable. The communist rulers are plotting to declare martial law. The youthful rebellion in times of political unrest can end up in a tragedy. A violent conflict with a martial law commissioner as well as the death of a close relative change just about everything in Janek's life.
12 Dec 2011 at 19:00 - "Jasminum", dir. Jan Jakub Kolski, Poland 2006, 103 min. Set in contemporary times, "Jasminum" (Latin name for jasmin) tell a story both mysterious and magical, full of sensuous scents and filled with that special light that love casts. The monastery shown in the movie wouldn't be any different from any other such place were it not for three monks living there, each endowed with a distinct fruit scent-bird cherry, sweet cherry and plum tree, all with unique qualities. One day the monks are visited by a young art restorer Natasza, who has been commissioned to renovate the monastery's paintings. Her charming and inquisitive 5-year-old daughter Gienia brings a lot of commotion into the orderly rhythm of monastery's life. In this story people, places and scents alike all have their secrets.
