The Visual Effects Society (VES) has announced its nominees for the 9th annual VES Awards in 2011. Two Polish productions from the Platige Image Studio are in the running - "City of Ruins" and "Paths of Hate"
The awards are given each year for outstanding visual effects artistry in 24 categories of film, animation, television, commercials and video games.
City of Ruins was produced by Platige for the Warsaw Rising Museum, depicting a bird's eye view of the demolished Polish capital in 1945. The film, which was based on an extensive archive of photographs and documents, was nominated in the category of Outstanding Visual Effects in a Special Venue Project.
Damian Nenow's Paths of Hate has garnered a nomination for Outstanding Achievement in an Animated Short. The film tells a short story that reaches into the savage heart of mankind, where dormant hatred, fury and hate leads to ultimate slaughter and extinction once these dangerous beasts are woken from their slumber. The director took care to present this dark and somber message within a spectacular visual framework.
Jeffrey A. Okun, Chair of the Visual Effects Society, gave the following statement following the announcement:
We are extremely proud to recognise these artists and their work with these nominations. The art of visual effects has become the art of storytelling in a new and compelling way and we congratulate these artists for the finest work in our field this year.
At the ceremony, Inception director Christopher Nolan is to be honoured with the inaugural VES Visionary Award. Ray Harryhausen is to receive the VES Lifetime Achievement Award. Inception leads the film nominations in four categories, along with HBO's Boardwalk Empire television series, which received five nominations.
The 9th Annual VES Awards takes place on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and will air exclusively on REELZCHANNEL Saturday, February 19, 2011 with encore presentations throughout February.
