The choice of artists scheduled to present at the ArtGeneve is loosely based upon two groups of Polish artists previously exhibited at the show, Künstlergruppen zeigen Gruppenkunstwerke /Artist-groups present Group-art-works, which took place in 1987 in Kassel as part of Documenta 8. They represented Gruppa from Warsaw and Koło Klipsa of Poznan. In Geneva, works from that period will be presented: tempera on paper drawings by Ryszard Grzyb and Leszek Knaflewski. Grzyb previously appeared jointly with Gruppa in Kassel. Alexandra Alisauskas, who deals with art groups operating in Poland and Lithuania in the 80s and 90s, previously reviewed the exhibition, Künstlergruppen zeigen Gruppenkunstwerke. The overarching narrative for Knaflewski’s drawings was based upon a collection of images (this practice similarly appeared in various other installations by Koło Klipsa).

The works of both artists selected for the upcoming joint show in Geneva were created in the 80s, but not in the context of collective practices within the group, which was the case back then. Instead, they are quite separate and largely not associated with the rest of their work. The collection has been brought together to constitute a calculated composition based on similarities (paper, themes) and contrasts (size, colour, expression, method).
Focusing now on the Polish art of the 80s, program research and other exhibitions run by Piktogram/BLA include a wide ranging process of restoring the importance of criticism, art history and art institutions during communism and socialist realism, and specifically throughout Central and Eastern Europe. Piktogram/BLA’s participation at ArtGeneve will re-determine the position and value of the region in the international art scene.
