Two symphonic concerts and a piano recital will encompass and present a major part of Andrzej Panufnik’s life's works in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. The repertoire for Panufnik: A Celebration has been chosen by Łukasz Borowicz, who will also conduct the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at both concerts.
Three great symphonies of the Polish composer will be performed, starting from his early work, 1948's Sinfonia Rustica, through the very popular Sinfonia Sacra to Panufnik’s last work, Symphony No. 10 from 1988. Two concerts are to be played as well: a violin concert with Alexander Sitkovetsky and a piano concert with Ewa Kupiec as soloist. The recital programme also includes Lullaby, Old Polish Suite and Divertimento for Strings. During the piano concert, Ewa Kupiec will present pieces by Andrzej Panufnik and Witold Lutosławski. Panufnik: A Celebration will begin with a discussion on Panufnik’s life and work hosted by Łukasz Borowicz and Lady Camilla Panufnik, the widow of the composer.
In 2014 the hundredth anniversary of Andrzej Panufnik’s birth was celebrated. He was called the "music representative of the People’s Republic of Poland" and held a number of official functions (among others he was elected to the UNESCO International Music Council and was a chief delegate to the People’s Republic of China); however, downtrodden by the lack of creative freedom, he chose to emigrate. In 1992, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. Sir Andrzej Panufnik died in 1991 at his home in Twickenham, near London.
