Bringing together renowned artists and young musicians to promote traditional and new forms of folk music for aficionados of all ages
Over three days of the festival young Polish musicians show their stuff with concerts of music inspired by tradition as part of the Folkowy Fonogram competition and Fonogram Źródeł Award (Folk Phonograph and Roots Phonograph). The competition wraps with a winners' concert, accompanied by performances by Polish and international stars of the folk scene.
Performers include Čači Vorba & 22 ° E Project (with participants from Poland, Macedonia, and Greece), Janusz Prusinowski Trio (Poland), Elena Ledda (Sardinia, Italy), and Franciszek Racis (Poland). Slovak composer Svetozár Stračina, who won the 2011 Grand Prix for best European folk recording in the European Broadcasting Union competition, also performs, as well as laureates of the past edition of the festival.
Selected from a total of sixty-eight applications, fourteen artists will participate in this year's Folk Music Competition. The jury will consider their repertoire, performance, arrangement, stylistic diversity and interpretation of traditional music. Competition pieces are performed in concert on May 13 and 14, followed by a winners concert on the 15th. As in the preceeding editions of the Festival, Burza Oklasków / The Storm of Applause competition gives audiences a chance to choose their favourite performers.
The winners of the competition for the 2010 Folkowy Fonogram - last year's most interesting folk record release - have already been announced. For this competition, thirty-four albums were submitted, with music inspired by traditional songs from all over the world. 1st prize and the 2010 Folkowy Fonogram title went to the album Serce" / "Heart by the Janusz Prusinowski Trio. The 2nd prize was awarded to Chopin na 5 kontynentach" / "Chopin on 5 continents by Maria Pomianowska and friends. Się Gra won the 3rd prize with their Memories of the Stone.
Inaugurated in, the Fonogram Źródeł contest presents eleven candidates competing this year. Albums in this competion were released by research institutes, regional and local culture centres, and associations presenting works by local artists. The jury gave the 1st place and title of the 2010 Fonogram Źródeł to Franciszek Racis. Muzykant released by the Krusznia Association. The 2nd prize was awarded to the Institute of Art History of the Polish Academy of Sciences for the Melodie ziemi kujawskiej" / "Melodies of the Kujawy Lands album, (a continuation of the Institute's series), while the 3rd place was given to Muzyka Odnaleziona publishing house for their two albums released in 2010: Mazurki do wynajęcia" / "Mazurkas for Rent and Mistrzowie harmonii. Triumf i porażka" / "Masters of Harmony. Victory and Defeat.
