The "Miłosz - A Hundred Years" exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Czesław Miłosz
Celebrating the year of Czesław Miłosz the exhibition, dedicated to the Polish Nobel Prize winner on the one hundredth anniversary of his birthday, is a chance to reacquaint ourselves with his works, his poetic works, prose, translations and essays, as an insightful observer and witness to his times.
A short catalogue accompanies the exhibition and informs viewers about the most important facts of the poet's biography, the titles of subsequent volumes of poetry, collections of essays and novels. The text is accompanied by photographs from different stages of his life - photographs showing places associated with him and reminiscent landscapes.
Entering the exhibition viewers are greeted by billboards which display quotes by Miłosz and other known authors such as Josif Brodsky, Seamus Heaney, Tomas Venclova and Stanisław Barańczak. The quotes note the importance of Miłosz's work and his place in the history of world literature.
"Czesław Miłosz is one of the greatest poets of our times, maybe even the greatest", these words spoken by Josif Brodsky during the presentation ceremony of the Neustadt Prize in literature to Miłosz in 1978, emphasise the universal character of his poetry.
The exhibition's iconographic materials are unknown photographs of Czesław Miłosz by the artist-photographer Maciej Billewicz in 1981, during the poet's first visit to Poland after thirty years. Billewicz accompanied Miłosz not only at official ceremonies but also at meetings with family members and friends, out of which a very interesting collection was born, showing a different, private side of the Nobel Prize winning poet.
Above all the exhibition presents the poetic accomplishments of Czesław Miłosz from different periods in his life.
"Miłosz - A Hundred Years" takes place on the 28th of September - 18th of November 2011 at the Stockholm University library - Växthuset, Huvudbiblioteket, Universitetsvägen 14 D.
