For many years, Maja Kleczewska has consistently explored the boundaries of theatre and acting with her experiments with form. Working on texts about violence, rejection and hatred, she tests the possibilities of every aspect of theatre. In Shakespeare’s text, Kleczewska found all our modernity with its cruelty and evil.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are in an unhappy, unfulfilled marriage. The world shown seems to be very close to reality as presented in Lynch’s and Almodovar’s movies. Kleczewska asks many questions: how is evil born and who bears responsibility for it? how far do we follow our own destiny, and how much we are just playthings in its hands? In the performance, the director used the style of cinema violence, and filtered Shakespearean drama through pop culture.
"The main characters of Opole's Macbeth twist the humanistic thesis of the unlimited possibilities inherent in man in a horrible way. They think that since you were forced into the hardships of existence, you deserve the best from life. They will hesitate at nothing to achieve this." - wrote Anna R. Burzyńska in Tygodnik Powszechny, a Polish magazine.
