The inaugural concert will take place on February 2, showcasing some of Poland's finest musical talent, including Agata Zubel (vocals), Cezary Duchnowski (piano, computer), Leszek Możdżer (piano) and Andrzej Bauer (cello), who will likewise direct the Warsaw Cellonet Group, comprised of Michał Borzykowski, Robert Dacko, Dariusz Dudziński, Maciej Kozendra, Bartosz Koziak, Krzysztof Lenczowski, Mikołaj Pałosz i Marcin Zdunik.
The concert's programme will feature new versions of some of the popular songs, written by Witold Lutosławski under the pseudonym of Derwid, including Cyrk jedzie" / "The Circus is coming (text by Tadeusz Urgacz), Jeden przystanek dalej" / "One stop further (text by Jerzy Miller), Miłość i świat" / "Love and the world (text by Eugeniusz Żytomierski), Złote pantofelki" / "Golden slippers (text by Adam Hosper), Z lat dziecinnych" / "From childhood (text by Jerzy Miller), Plamy na słońcu" / "Sunspots (text by Jerzy Miller) and Znajdziesz mnie wszędzie" / "You'll find me everywhere (text by Zbigniew Kaszkur and Zbigniew Zapert).
The competition itself takes place between February 3 - 8, with the closing concert and awards ceremony set for February 10.
Aleksander Nowak's new work is also in the spotlight this evening - Ulica Spokojna 3" / "No. 3 Spokojna Street for eight cellos - as well as Możdżer's Seven Miniatures for piano and violin.
The inaugural concert of the Eighth Lutosławski International Cello Competition takes place on February 2, 2011, in the Great Assembly Room of Warsaw's Royal Castle.
