The exhibition celebrates some of the greatest posters designed for the Gustaw Holoubek Dramatic Theatre in Warsaw by artists such as Franciszek Starowieyski, Roman Cieślewicz, Jan Młodożeniec
The event is accompanied by meetings with famous theatre artists and actors.
Theatre poster is the first interpretation of a performance and often presents an entirely distinct artistic statement on the work in question. The exhibit includes works created since the beginnings of the theatre and the newest ones that promote shows in the ongoing repertoire of the
Drama Theatre. The works of the great masters of posters -
Jan Lenica,
Henryk Tomaszewski,
Franciszek Starowieyski,
Roman Cieślewicz, Jan Młodożeniec and
Waldemar Świerzy - are shown against the works of artists who currently mold the shape of theatre graphic arts: Joanna Górska, Jerzy Skakun, Robert Czerniawski and Bartek Arobal just to name a few.
The exhibition is complemented by photographs from performances as well as theatre costumes.
Poster is an independent field in art. It has its own language and semantics necessary for creating an image that will influence the viewer. It is this image that triggers the right connotation in the viewer, releases emotion and constitutes not only the artistic value of the poster itself but first and foremost its functionality, says Maria Kurpik, curator of the Poster Museum in Wilanów. Not surprisingly theatre, a field of art that's always exploring, going beyond the assumed notions, is an extraordinary source of inspiration for poster artists. In the modest, 2-dimensional space they try to show with sometimes a single graphic sign a collective work of the actors, director and set designer.
A poster created for a specific performance is a complex composition, a result of combining the sensitivity and intelligence of many prominent artists. Therefore, as none of the other art domains, it has the ability to transcend the accepted conventions. Described as the signal or a promise, the theatre poster, disturbing, provoking, inspiring the viewer, is a prognosis of experiencing something special, something that can only be experienced in a theatre. It is a perfect symbiosis, born out not of necessity but mutual fascination.
The exhibition runs April 16 - June 19, 2011.
