The project is composed of three parts: new installations - Triptych on Yellow Background (2010) and a reuptake of the Theatre of Love (1986) - paintings presenting images from years 1968-1975 and - finally - a series of self-portraits entitled"Autophotographs"- self-portraits taken in the '70s.
Ewa Kuryluk was born in Krakow in 1946, she received her baccalaureate in Vienna and spent 15 years in the United States. Currently she lives in Paris. Her works have been exhibited in the most prestigious galleries around the world. She is a painter, drawer, author of installations, art historian, novelist and essayist - her books educated several generations of art lovers.
In her early work from the '60s and '70s she uses themes and design features characteristic for the new figurative painting and hyperrealism- sharp, flatly applied colors and figurations. At the beginning of the '80s she gave up easel painting and began drawing rather precise sketches of images (mostly male and female nudes) on pieces of white cotton or silk. Out of the soft, textile "voiles" and "shrouds", Kuryluk created spatial installations.
Curator Zofia Gebhard-Jaroszewska says:
Her work has always had an undisguised autobiographical feature. It is also present in the pieces presented at the exhibition in Wrocław. Most often the main character in her paintings is the artist herself, delving into her surroundings and her mind: her dreams, memories, inspirations. Her pictures, auto-portraits and portraits create stories bring in various interpretations. Looking at these images, we understand, how the processes of photography and painting, based on the light and color, connect with one other
The exhibit is accompanied by Ewa Kuryluk's latest book Outlining the Shade - an album designed by the artist presenting over a hundred of her paintings from the years 1964 - 1978. This first Polish publication dedicated to Kuryluk's painting has been possible thanks to three galeries: BWA Design Gallery in Wrocław, Czyelnia Sztuki in Gliwice and Artemis Gallery in Kraków.
