The protagonist of this Grotowskian narrative contends with his male complexes during the funeral of his own father
Szymon Bogacza's tragicomedy is both a literal and figurative dismantling of a contemporary man, throwing him into harsh confrontation with the original, archetypal male; a breadwinner, domineering in character and the family figurehead. Piotr Kruszczyński brings the struggle to the stage.
In a series of imagined encounters with his now-deceased parent, the protagonist tries to resolve his broken family relations. By doing so, he also hopes to rid himself of a trauma from his youth, the source of an ongoing boyhood rebellion. His father's specific condition allows for such intimate conversation; whether its through cleaning his corpse or self-flagellating with his belt.
Bogacza's previous theatrical work (entitled In the Name of the Father and of the Son) was singled out as a competitor in Gdynia's 2009 Dramaturgical Awards. Hoping to do justice to a play that is thirty-five years in the making will be Leszek Hoppe, who will be taking on the role of Szwagra.
