The 3rd "Kody" / "Codes" Festival of Traditional and Avant-garde Music brings together experimental and traditional jazz music to Poland's largest city east of the Vistula River
"Codes" Festival is an international event dedicated to the idea of combining the archaic and the new in music. The festival provides excellent contemporary composers and representatives of avant-garde jazz with an opportunity to meet traditional musicians and artists devoted to musical reconstruction.
When improvising with regards to form, or media of expression they employ, contemporary composers and musicians often choose to refer to archaic musical forms. The mixture of two distinctive conventions results in a completely unique listening experience, where the magic of archaic music meets the aesthetic function of contemporary compositions. They co-exist, mix and merge.
For this year's edition, traditional Korean culture will be presented to the audience by Monn Oak Joo, a master of the Parsoni art. Fran Fairfield, a young musician, perfect at recreating and putting new life into the recordings of Alan Lomax will introduce American culture. Also performing will be a very unique project, a trio of great music figures: Iva Bittova from the Czech Republic,
Leszek Możdżer and
Jacek Kochan. Another act of the extraordinary will feature the very particular drummer Evelyn Glennie and a turntablism master Dj Yoda. In addition, Susie Ibara, Ikue Mori and Sylvie Courvoisier - key representatives of New York's avant-garde music scene will appear at the festival with their project "Mephista".
Jan Bernard and
Jerzy Kornowicz, the organisers of the festival wrote:
What does a young modernist Jagoda Szmytka's composition have in common with the spring rite konopielka carol, or the distinct components of Iva Bittova and Leszek Możdżer's improvisation? What could result from the juxtapositioning of sounds of the jazz pianist Joanna Duda with the musical experience of Ewa Grochowska, a student of the great folk violinist Jan Gaca? Or Rytis Ambrazevincius' attitude of a thorough expert-restorer of traditional Lithuanian songs with the sound structures of Antanas Kucińskas - a composer who applies techniques such as sampling, looping and scratching to a material of historical significance?
Answers to these questions lead to narrations about humans - told at the Codes with great focus on musical beauty, and opening up the space between very different aesthetics.
