Among the compositions that the Minsk-based soloist group "Classic-Avantgarde" performed were pieces by Karol Szymanowski, Witold Lutosławski, Paweł Strzelecki and Jerzy Kornowicz
The works of Polish composers were performed by "Classic-Avantgarde Symphonie" led by Belarussian composer Dmitri Lybin. The Belarus State Philharmonic performance was conducted by Vladimir Baidov. "Classic-Avantgarde" performed sixteenth- seventeenth century Belarussian works, music from antiquity, and both Russian avante-garde and classical masterpieces, in addition to a repertoire of contemporary Belarussian and world classics.
Szymanowski’s “Kurpiowski’s Songs” was composed in the early 1930s for voice and piano and makes up one of the last works in a cycle of vocal pieces that the composer created. “Prince Potomkin” was written at the beginning of 1925 and was commissioned by Leon Schiller, the artistic director of Boguslawski Theatre in Warsaw. Lutosławski’s “Little Suite” was written with the Polish Radio symphony orchestra in mind, based on elements of folklore in Polish culture.
The most modern piece in the evening’s repertoire was “Scenes from Bułhakow” by Jerzy Kornowicz, born in 1959 and a graduate of the Music Academy in Warsaw and the Louis Andriessen Royal Conservatory in the Hague. “Scenes from Bałhakow” was composed in 2011 for a piano, symphony and including electronic noise elements. It was commissioned for the “Warsaw Autumn” International Festival of Contemporary Music.
