This year's edition of the festival puts Italian film star Claudia Cardinale, Polish film critic Zygmunt Kałużyński and American critic Roger Ebert in the spotlight
The Cinema Mundi festival is aimed at presenting a broad panorama of international films well beyond the mainstream, exploring the future of film in the 21st Century. This year's edition pays tribute to critics Zygmunt Kałużyński and Roger Ebert.
Zygmunt Kałużyński (1918-2004) was an oustanding Polish film critic and host of the television programme Pearls of Junk, which popularised cinema history. His programmes, articles and books create a significant body of work for Polish critical writing - these works are the focus of several discussions at the festival. Ebert, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and host of the long-running television programme "Siskel and Ebert at the Movies", received the Cinema Mundi Best Critic award at the Polish Consulate in Chicago earlier this week.
The festival features a number of important films across four continental sections: Africa, America, Europe and Asia, including 2010 Cannes Palme d'Or winner Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Thailand), Of Gods and Men, directed by Xavier Beauvois (France),
All that I Love, directed by
Jacek Borcuch and a retrospective of films starring Claudia Cardinale, including Mehdi Ben Atty's 2010 film The Thread.
