The exhibition is an extraordinary homage to Fryderyk Chopin, aiming to connect his musical genius with works by outstanding Impressionists such as Monet, Renoir, Sisley and Degas.
Impressionism, an art movement based on instant images and sensualism derived from nature, appears in the photos of Tomek Sikora's Chopin project. Regarding the collection, Sikora states that he was inspired by Chopin's journeys:
Fryderyk Chopin travelled throughout Poland by stagecoach, because he wanted to take it slow. This way, he got the chance to observe miracles of nature, people inside the villages, women singing and working in the fields and hanging clothes. All of these inspired the sensitive musician; he created a picture of his birthplace, and at the same time, he recalled the joys of youth, as well as moments of anxiousness, because easygoing moments disappear easily with the rush of responsibilities and disappointments. I am travelling through Poland just like him and trying to catch whatever helps establish our Polish identity. These pretty, exciting photos get stronger and stronger and occupy our fantasy world.
Tomek Sikora was born in Warsaw, Poland, and is the son of a painter (his mother) and a sculptor (his father). He has produced posters for theatre and film, and served as photojournalist for ten years. Sikora has worked in both artistic and commercial photography, and is also the founder of the Homeless Gallery, promoting independent photography from various countries.
On view between 2nd October, 2014 and 02nd January, 2015, Chopin and His Nostalgia in Sikora's Photography, promises a nostalgic journey in time through Frederic Chopin’s mastery and Tomek Sikora’s brilliance.
