The Austrian Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen has opened its call for applications for the Bronisław Geremek Fellowships 2011 - 2012.
Bronisław Geremek (1932-2008), a scholar, intellectual and politician, a passionate Pole and exemplary European, was a source of intellectual inspiration as well as a model for prudent action and moral decency for many. Geremek was a supporter of the IWM almost from its inception and a member of its Board of Patrons until his death.
The objective of the Bronisław Geremek Fellowship program is to foster study and reflection of Polish national heritage in the context of European tradition. The fellowship enables young Polish doctoral or post-doctoral researchers to become members of the international, multidisciplinary scholarly community of the IWM to work on a research project of their choice. The fellowship is open to all academic disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.
The Bronisław Geremek Fellows will be invited to spend the academic year 2011/12 at the IWM to pursue their research projects while working in residence. During the stay in Vienna the fellows will receive a stipend; the IWM will provide a personal office, in-house research facilities and other relevant sources in Vienna. Furthermore, the fellows will participate in the scholarly community and activities of the Institute.
Eligible candidates for the Bronisław Geremek Fellowship should permanently reside in Poland or be Polish citizens. They should be currently pursuing a doctoral degree or have recently obtained a PhD in any discipline in the humanities or social sciences. Moreover, they should not be older than 35 years. The deadline for applications is April 1, 2011.
The finalists will be selected by a jury of experts consisting of:
- Marcin Król, Professor of History of Ideas, Warsaw University
- Paweł Potoroczyn, Director of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, Warsaw
- Timothy D. Snyder, Professor of History, Yale University, Permanent Fellow, Institute for Human Sciences
- Jerzy Szacki, Professor of Sociology, Warsaw School of Social Psychology
- Adam Zagajewski, poet, Professor at the Committee for Social Thought, University of Chicago.
Applicants will be notified of the jury decision by June/July 2011.
The Bronisław Geremek Fellowship is financed by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in cooperation with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
