Agnieszka Grochowska in "Beyond the Steppes", dir. Vanja d'Alcantara
Polish actress Agnieszka Grochowska received the award for Best Actress at the Ostend Film Festival in Belgium for her role in "Beyond the Steppes"
Grochowska plays the leading role in the film, which was also nominated in three other categories: directing (Vanja d'Alcantara), photography (Ruben Impens) and best film debut.
The Belgian-Polish production is set in 1940 and follows a young Polish woman, Nina, who is exiled to Siberia together with her infant child. Nina is forced to work on a sovkhoz, supervised by the Russian political police. When her child becomes ill, Nina embarks on a journey in search of a cure with a group of Kazakh nomads.
"Beyond the Steppes" recounts the intimate and personal experiences of a woman in exile and her struggle with inhumane conditions on foreign soil.
Besides Agnieszka Grochowska, Polish actors Aleksandra Justa and Borys Szyc also star in the film.
The film was co-produced by the Polish Film Institute.
