Magdalena Abakanowicz’s installation Crowd and Individual on San Giorgio Maggiore (one of Venice’s islands, opposite Piazza San Marco) will be open until 2nd August 2015. 110 famous figures made of jute are presented at The Giorgio Cini Foundation.
The Italian press emphasises that collections of the Polish sculptor’s Tłum / Crowd figures have been exhibited around the world. They stress, however, that this is the first time that this big installation has visited Venice; thus the media describe it as one of the most important cultural events of this year.
Abakanowicz’s figures won’t leave anyone indifferent as they are a touching mass portrait of the whole époque, as well as of a human, deprived of a face and disfigured, lost.
– the Italian media add.
At the same time, this a grand return to Venice for the artist – she represented Poland on the Venice Art Biennale in 1980, exactly 35 years ago.
This exhibition is a tribute to the artist, who symbolises and shows experiments in art of past decades.
– Luca Massimo Barbero, the curator, said.
