Wojciech Staroniewicz, born in 1954, has been present on the jazz scene for over 20 years as a saxophonist and composer. His music is a wide spectrum of styles – from mainstream through the fusion of jazz and folk to electric jazz.
The diversity of inspirations of Staroniewicz can be heard on 7 albums recorded under his own name: Karambola, Quiet City, Hand made, Converession, Alternations, A’freak-an Project and Tranquillo.
As an excellent sideman, he is often invited to cooperate with other musicians like Norwegian Loud Jazz Band or Włodzimierz Nahorny’s sextet. In 1991, as the only Polish jazz sax player, Staroniewicz was qualified for the semi-final of the International Jazz Improvisation Competition in Washington and thus found himself among 21 best sax players of the world. At Jazz Juniors Festival he won 1st prize for best composition, and with his band Set-Off he reached for the main prize at another Polish festival and second prize at International Contest for Youth Orchestras in Hoeilaart, Belgium. From 2010 to 2012 he was a member of the Council of Phonographic Academy in Poland.
Throughout his career, Staroniewicz has performed in almost all European countries as well as in Shanghai. He participated in most Polish jazz festivals, including Jazz Jamboree, Jazz nad Odrą, Warsaw Summer Jazz Days, Gdynia Summer Jazz Days.
Recently, apart from active work in the domain of jazz in the company of most renowned Polish jazz musicians like Włodek Pawlik, Krzysztof Herdzin, Andrzej Jagodziński, he has been performing as a soloist with Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra in Sopot.
