The first ‘striped’ painting was created in 1980 as a result of specific circumstances. The painter was sharing his studio with the now deceased friend, Tadeusz Brudzyński – their working conditions only allowed straightforward painting actions. The painting was presented, among others, at the exhibition Seventy-Two Pieces of Painting at the CCA Ujazdowski Castle (1999). The exhibition included almost 20 works created in 1997-1999 – predominantly abstract compositions consisting of rhythmically arranged stripes in various colours, e.g. red, yellow or blue. Some paintings constituted parts of a greater whole. One of them, titled 28 Pieces was made up of smaller paintings, building up to a colourful jigsaw. The artist described his works in the catalogue:
It is a technique and style that is lighter from the previous one and devoid of existential meditations.
In 2004, the Nissan company invited the artist to paint a car. Ziemiński took this challenge seriously and worked hard to prepare for it properly – he carried out a series of studies and sketches, as well as spent four days in a specialized workshop for car painters. Any mistakes would turn out to be extremely costly. He effectively created an object which, without losing its functionality, bore truly artistic features. The New Nissan Micra in blue and red stripes looked like a mobile painting. When asked in an interview for the Arteon magazine, why he decided to take up this endeavour, Ziemiński answered: “So that painting can ride around town.”
