Sociological Record, a monumental photography project by Zofia Rydet, is currently on display in an exhibition at Jeu de Paume in Paris.
The exhibition premiered in the Museum of Modern Art In Warsaw in 2015. The edition prepared for Jeu de Paume concentrates on the main part of Sociological Record – consisting of portraits of people indoors, as well as two smaller collections: Disappearing Professions and Women on the Doorstep. Selected images from the collection Apartments of the Artists are also presented.
Sociological Record was created between 1978 and the end of the 90s. Zofia Rydet was convinced that objects and paintings kept in the private space define people and ‘show their psychology’. The photographer decided to undertake a mission to archive the interiors of Polish homes. She was interested in the relationship between people and objects, as well as the way in which individual aesthetic preferences and opinions on religion and politics manifest themselves through the arrangement of the private space. The cycle consists of 20,000 photos taken in over one hundreds towns, mainly in Podhale, Upper Silesia, and the region of Suwałki.
The exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw was an attempt to reconstruct an unrealised exhibition, based on the notes and private correspondence of Zofia Rydet. It was a summary of the research project concerning the archives of the Sociological Record carried out by four institutions: the Foundation for Visual Arts, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, the Zofia Rydet Foundation, and the Museum in Gliwice. In effect, the almost complete Sociological Record with many source materials has been digitalised and is available online in the archives of www.zofiarydet.com.
In 2017 the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the University of Chicago Press is going to publish an anthology of texts about Sociological Record edited by Krzysztof Pijarski.
The exhibition in Paris will be complemented by the publication of texts by Sebastian Cichocki and Régis Durand.
