Wrocław Capital of Culture Comes to Budapest
At the end of September 2016, two exhibitions prepared by the Wrocław Contemporary Museum will be opened in Budapest as part of the European Capital of Culture 2016 programme.
The Platán Gallery in Budapest will host the Jet Lag exhibition, which tackles the issue of artistic residencies as a popular form of contemporary sponsorship. Young Wrocław artists Olaf Brzeski, Krystian Truth Czaplicki, Karolina Freino & James Muriuki, Piotr Skiba, Kama Sokolnicka, Karol Radziszewski, and Gregory Różański have been invited to take part. The presentation was prepared in collaboration with the Polish Institute in Budapest.
The event's curator Sylwia Serafinowicz wrote:
Residences provide a real escape for artists from the compulsion to earn money, and make it possible to travel to new, inspiring places. Since the moment the Prix de Rome was founded by Louis XIV, these conditions have been considered as perfect for creating art. Nowadays art visits are much briefer and more limited than those of the 17th century, but instead they reflect the pace of our times and our obsession with quick and quantifiable results. The Wrocław artists of the young generation who have been invited to take part in the exhibition are trying to point out this state of affairs. The main subject of all these works, which were created during visits to residences abroad, is Jet Lag, insomnia, the clash between reality and imagination and the pressure of time. The unpleasant consequences of travelling are transformed into attractive objects, photos, and videos.

In the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art in Budapest, the exhibition Wild West: History of the Wrocław Avant-garde will be opened for the last time. It presents nearly five hundred objects from various categories such as visual arts, architecture, city planning, theatre arts, cinematography, design, and everyday life in Wrocław from the 60s to the present day.
Dorota Monkiewicz, commissioner of the exhibition and head manager of Wrocław Contemporary Museum, said during an interview with Gazeta Wyborcza:
It is not about looking for loyalty, because the art which was created by Grotowski or Wajda was absolutely universal. The artistic scene which appeared in Wrocław was so strong that it became a waypoint for itself, without the help of the centre. The Polish avant-garde was born in Wrocław. It’s easy to forget about it due to our centric narration. We remember Natalia LL and Stanisława Dróżdża, but consciousness of the bigger scene on which they were present is very slight.
