World Architecture Festival: Olsztyn in the Finals
In early November, we will find out if All-year-round Sports and Leisure Center in Olsztyn has won the title of World Building of the Year 2015.
Established in 2008, the World Architecture Festival (WAF) starts on 4th November 2015. It is an international event focused on brand new achievements in world architrcture. The festival is accompanied by dozens of meetings, conferences and debates featuring renowned researchers and architects. As the organisers claim, WAF was created to celebrate and promote the most interesting and valuable achievements in the field of architecture.
One of the most important elements of the WAF are competitions: each and every year there are thousands of projects and completed buildings submitted that take part in competitions across several categories. Twelve sections concern future visions and projects, and eighteen sections are for already-completed buildings (including offices, houses, schools and cultural institutions). From hundreds of entries, an international jury picks two: World Building of the Year, and Future Project of the Year. This year's jury includes Charles Jencks, Will Alsop and Peter Cook.

We have already found out the finalists which this year includes a Polish building in the Civic and Community section: the All-year-round Sports and Leisure Center built in 2014 at Ukiel Lake in Olsztyn. The centre was designed by Dżus GK Architekci, a team made up of Grzegorz Dżus, Katarzyna Orzechowska-Dżus, Małgorzata Sender, Agnieszka Adamczyk and Tamara Zawadzka, between 2011 and 2012. All-year-round Sports and Leisure Center brings to life the idea of Olsztyn's openess on a lake situated in the very centre of the city. Until now the unusual location had not been taken advantage of an unusual location of the lake, despite there being sixteen lakes throughout the city. Thanks to this new project, Olsztyn has a modern, multifunctional, all-year leisure centre that is attractive to both inhabitants of the city and tourists. It includes the biggest beach on an inland body of water in Poland.
The complex includes also buildings, piers and recreational facilities, all of them bound by promenades and cycle paths. It has hire centres, playfields, playgrounds, cafes, restaurants and all necessary infrastructure (toilets, changing rooms, etc.). The designers from Dżus GK Architekci wanted to avoid overwhelming the natural surroundings and ensure it was well-adapted to the landscape. The main building, which belongs to the local water services, has the form of a sleek cuboid, with two floors, glass walls and a partial-location over the lake. It is surrounded by wooden piers, and there is a terrace on the top of the building. The rest of the pavilions are situated on land. They have simple forms, based on wood and glass. All-year-round Sports and Leisure Center is remarkable thanks to its functional organisation and the way it seems like a simple project perfectly inscribed into the landscape.
