From the very beginning of his career, he worked with the weekly magazine Przekrój from Kraków. The covers of the magazine were graced with Plewiński’s photographs of young women, some of his best recognised pieces. Another important part of his artistic work is theatrical photography – putting them together in the archive has created a very interesting history of Polish post-war theatre.
The Visual Art Foundation decided to remind people about Plewiński’s photgraphic reportages. Previously they also prepared an online archive of Zofia Rydet’s photographical output. Wojciech Nowicki, curator of the exhibition and platform, says:
Plewiński’s reportages, looked at today, strike you with their perfect framing, their confident, fast and repeated interest in man and what surrounds him. The subject of his photos is often a portrait; this finally brings attention to his gift for catching the so-called spirit of the times. The photographer concentrates on things he finds interesting (that much is clear to see, since his pictures were taken separately from the press orders) but leaves no doubt as to when a picture was taken.
The site wojciechplewinski.com has a digital archive of the photographer with over two thousand pictures from his 60-year-long career as well as a virtual gallery with twelve series from 1957 to 2003 chosen by the project’s curator.
The material will be complemented by texts about Plewiński and the selected series, as well as the portraits and the archive materials. Every single series will be enriched by audio commentary by the photographer himself, where Plewiński reveals the circumstances behind certain pieces. Finally, there is also a short video where the artist talks about his career.
