The first HENRYK WIENIAWSKI INTERNATIONAL VIOLIN COMPETITION took place in 1935 in Warsaw on the centennial birth of its patron. Its main conceptor was the volinist's nephew Adam Wieniawski, while the organizer, the Warsaw Music Society. The aim of the competition is to pay hommage to a great Polish virtuoso, popularizing the creativity of
Henryk Wieniawski and to ensure the promotion of young violinists. Five year intervals were planned for subsequent editions of the competitions. However, these intentions were ruled out by the break-out of World War II.
The second Wieniawski competition was not organized in Poznan until after the war in 1952. From that moment, they were held regularly every five years and its organizer is the Henryk Wieniawski Music Society in Poznan.
The first competition consisted of two stages. From the second to the eleventh edition the competition became a three-stage competition. In 2001, a decision was made to introduce a change to competition rules and establish a four-stage competition. The first stage is not open to the public and the jurors listen to the candidates' recordings sent in on video cassettes. The remaining stages take place in front of a public audience. A maximum of 60 violinists qualify for the second stage, 24 for the third, and 12 for the fourth. During the final, the competition participants perform a concert accompanied by orchestra. The Wieniawski Competition is open to violinists who have not yet turned 30 years of age.
