Stream the New Krzysztof Penderecki Tribute EP
For the 87th anniversary of the composer’s birthday, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute is releasing a record dedicated to Krzysztof Penderecki on vinyl and streaming platforms. It features unique material – Penderecki’s soundtrack to the 1964 film ‘Malarze Gdańscy’ (Painters of Gdańsk), as well as new pieces by Paweł Romańczuk, Robert Piotrowicz and Skalpel. Listen to the new ‘Responses to the Master’ EP below.
Although Krzysztof Penderecki’s symphonic and chamber pieces have famously been used in movies and television, his actual original film scores are still not as well known. And yet the Maestro’s scores are examples of unbridled compositional freedom.
What is striking about Penderecki’s music from the 1960s is his clear fascination with sound, how he plays with different styles and uses the experimental techniques of electronic music. All these features come to life with expressive clarity in the music he composed for Marian Ussorowski’s documentary Malarze Gdańscy (Painters of Gdańsk).

The three contemporary pieces by Polish composers included in the record Responses to the Master are the best proof of Penderecki’s timelessness. His oeuvre still fascinates Robert Piotrowicz, who can be heard continuing the traditions of the Polish Radio Experimental Studio, Paweł Romańczuk, whose piece sounds like a search for and construction of unusual instruments, as well the banality-averse Skalpel duo. Rooted in the legacy of Krzysztof Penderecki, all their works here complement Penderecki’s score and each other on the new release.
The vinyl will be available in very limited promotional supply, but the record can be streamed on Soundcloud from 23rd November 2020, and will soon be available on other streaming platforms as well.
