Sitting Polish-style in Wrocław
Overwhelmed by the programme of the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016? You can rest in the legendary Barbara bar – just sit on one of the iconic chairs created by Polish designers.
The exhibition Usiądź po Polsku (editor’s translation: ‘Sitting Polish Style’) showcases a selection of 90 seats created by Polish designers and produced by Polish companies between 1941 and 2014. Many of the featured projects featured have proved icons of their time and gained international recognition. Contemporary Polish furniture design is as successful – in 2014 alone twelve Polish designers received the Red Dot Award, known also as the Oscars of design. The exhibition’s organizers write:
Such a wide selection of design icons reflects the importance, diversity, and scale of Polish furniture design, from the post-war decades until today, both in the field of experimental and industrial design.
Classic and famous designs are complemented by a presentation of collectors’ treasures: chairs and seats from post-war Poland. Actively sought by design enthusiasts, they are nameless gems of newly-appreciated Polish design. Most of the chairs and armchairs presented at the exhibition come from the collection of Dr. Krystyna Łuczak-Surówka, a design historian.
Part of the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016, the exhibition is held in Barbara – once an iconic fast food bar, now turned into an ECC information point and meeting place.
