Revealed: The 43 Pianists in the 2nd Stage of the Chopin Competiton
The jury has chosen 43 participants from 16 different countries. 8 of them are from Poland, plus 5 each from China, Japan and South Korea, 4 from the USA, 3 from both Russia and Canada, 2 from Italy and individual entrants from Hungary, France, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Greece, Latvia, Croatia and Great Britain.
The jury, consisting of 17 members led by Professor Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń, announced on 7th October, right after 10 pm, the results of the first stage of the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition. As Artur Szklener, the director of the Fruderyk Chopin Institute said, “as many as 43 people” qualified to the second stage. The next stage will include 8 Polish musicians: Łukasz Piotr Byrdy, Łukasz Krupiński, Krzysztof Książek, Łukasz Mikołajczyk, Piotr Nowak, Michał Szymanowski, Andrzej Wierciński and Szymon Nehring. Szklener added:
78 pianists from 20 countries performed on the stage of the National Philharmonic during the 5 days of the Chopin Competition. On behalf of the organisers and almost one-million (and still increasing) viewers from around the world participating in our Chopin festival, I would like to thank all the artists for their musical interpretations, which we will remember for a long time.

The next auditions begin on 9th October at 10am and will last until 12th October. The first to perform will be Łukasz Piotr Byrdy. The pianists should now perform one of the following waltzes: Waltz in E flat major, Op. 18; Waltz in A flat major, Op. 34 No. 1; Waltz in F major, Op. 34 No. 3; Waltz in A flat major, Op. 42; Waltz in A flat minor, Op. 64 No. 3. There should be also one of the following compositions in the repertoire: Ballade in G minor, Op. 23; Ballade in F major, Op. 38; Ballade in A flat major, Op. 47; Ballade in F minor, Op. 52; Barcarolle in F-sharp major, Op. 60; Fantasy F minor, Op. 49; Scherzo in B minor, Op. 20; Scherzo in B flat minor, Op. 31; Scherzo in C sharp minor, Op. 39; Scherzo in E major, Op. 54, or Polonaise-Fantasy in A flat major, Op. 61. The performance should be complemented with one of the following polonaises: Andante spianato and Grande Polonaise Brillante in E flat major, Op. 22; Polonaise in A flat major, Op. 52; or both polonaises from Op. 26. If the performance is not as long as required 30-40 minutes, pianists can additionally perform any work by Fryderyk Chopin.
