'Rebel Spirits', or The Story of Polish Jazz
Discover the rich history of Polish jazz with the launch of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute's brand new podcast ‘Rebel Spirits: The Story of Polish Jazz’! Each episode will showcase the greatest musicians and voices of Polish jazz and is hosted by Paweł Brodowski, editor-in-chief of Jazz Forum magazine.
The Rebel Spirits podcast shares the remarkable, ground-breaking and unusual phenomena of the Polish jazz scene. 'Polish jazz scene' may even sound like a very surprising phrase. Polish jazz is a thing? And there is a whole scene? It's quite na extraordinary story – and taking into account the unusual social and political circumstances in which Polish jazz was born it becomes even more intriguing. Recounted through the memories of the most prominent Polish jazz musicians, the story begins during the communist era, and continues today. It reveals a picture of an incredible group of artists, freethinkers and dreamers who, in times of difficult decisions, compromises and longing for a better world, created something beautiful.
'Rebel Spirits' tells a story not only about music and musicians, but also about the rebellious underground and alternative culture of Poland, explains Barbara Krzeska, Deputy Director of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
The first two episodes feature iconic Polish jazz singer Urszula Dudziak and legendary Polish saxophone player Jan 'Ptaszyn' Wróblewski. Other guests will include Adam Makowicz, Michał Urbaniak and Zbigniew Namysłowski.

In each episode, the musicians share their personal experiences, talk about their passions, their careers, and remember their rebellion against the communist regime. They also reminisce about their friends and bandmates such as Krzysztof Komeda, Tomasz Stańko, Andrzej Kurylewicz, Andrzej Trzaskowski, and Jacek Olter. Here, consistency and chronological order give way to anecdotes and memories – seemingly shared in the light of the early morning after an all-night jam session. These stories capture the spirit of their times and reveal some truths about what jazz and jazz musicians used to be and are today. The project is also a tribute to the late Komeda, in honour of the 90th anniversary of his birth.
The Adam Mickiewicz Institute is planning to continue the Rebel Spirits podcasts: the forthcoming series will focus on more legendary jazz performers, as well as the younger generation of Polish jazz musicians.
