Polish Artist at the Rumney Guggenheim Gallery in New York
At the beginning of October 2015, a new gallery opened in Brooklyn carrying on the legacy of two important names in the world of art: Guggenheim and Rumney. The inaugural exhibition included the works of a Polish artist, Olek, created in collaboration with Michelle P. Dodson.
The founder of the gallery, or rather the project space as it came to be known, is Santiago Rumney Guggenheim, 23-year-old grandson of the famous American art collector, Peggy Guggenheim. Santiago’s father, Sandro Rumney, ran galleries in New York City and Paris. His grandfather, Ralph Rumney, was a co-founder of Situationist International, a revolutionary post-war organisation grouping together artists and intellectuals.
Rumney Guggenheim said before the gallery opening:
Here, in this project, I try to carry on the legacy of my family by bringing new faces to the art world. But I am making a strong point to my family that I am trying to build this on my own… It’s difficult to have people take you seriously when you are young.
Since 2014, Santiago Rumney Guggenheim has worked as a director of Chelsea’s Rare Gallery. Before moving to the USA, he interned at the Venice Biennale and Peggy Guggenheim Collection.
The first exhibition at the Rumney Guggenheim (9th October to 11th November 2015), titled Some Place Like Home, featured works by young female artists such as Olivia Steele, Boxhead (aka Begoña Toledo), Turgeman and Olek in collaboration with Michelle P. Dodson.
