Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya 24.11-07.12.2012
By the end of 2012, some of the largest Japanese cities - Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Nagoya - hosted Poland Film Festival co-organized by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute. It was by far the most comprehensive presentation of Polish cinema in Japan. The audience had chance to watch some of the greatest works of Polish filmmakers, including "Kanal" and "Ashes and Diamonds" by Andrzej Wajda, "Knife in the Water" by Roman Polanski and many more.
The festival was organized on the initiative of Nobuo Murata, founder and CEO of Mermaid Films, dealing with film distribution and dvd publishing. His company was the Japanese distributor of such Polish films as "Four Nights with Anna" and "Essential Killing" by Jerzy Skolimowski, as well as films of other Polish masters: Andrzej Wajda and Jerzy Kawalerowicz. In view of the great interest of the Japanese audience in Polish films, he decided to organize a Polish cinema festival. Its aim was to raise awareness of Polish film culture in Japan, as well as to introduce classics of the Polish cinema to Japanese theaters. The festival was addressed to a wide audience - film fans, journalists, critics and students of film-related courses. The event is planned to continue in subsequent editions in 2013 and later.
Majority of screenings took place in Tokyo. The festival had also its Kyoto edition, and later it was presented in several other Japanese cities, including Osaka and Nagoya. The screenings in Tokyo's Theatre Image Forum were attended by over 3,000 people. On 25th of November, meeting of the Japanese audience with the honorary guest of the Festival, director Jerzy Skolimowski, was held in Tokyo. On the same day other meetings and discussions with the audience after the screenings were held.
The festival featured several screenings of two films from the documentary series "Guide to the Poles", produced by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute: "Beats of Freedom" and "Political Dress".
