A new virtual exhibition by the Museum of Literature features a photo album that viewers can flip through with vintage portraits from their archives.

The Museum of Literature has unveiled an online photo album where the public can view vintage photos of artists who made critical contributions to Polish culture. It's a rare opportunity to see Witold Gombrowicz as a child and Leopold Staff in a bathing suit.
Photomania is an online web page designed in the form of a photo album where the public can flip through old images of famous icons. Taken from museum archives, the 350 portraits span from the 19th through the 20th century and are segmented in nine sections. Each part begins with a theme then presents pages on which are "mounted" sepia, re-coloured and black and white photos. While browsing, viewers can click on images for details about the artists in the photos, when and where an image was taken and by whom. Included in the volume are baby pictures, family portraits, descriptions of photography equipment and even a glossary with words about fashion from the 19th century. The online gallery is also available in English version - you can view it here.
The Museum of Literature is an institution co-run by the Mazowieckie Voivodeship Local Government and the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. It was created in 1948 when the National Museum of Warsaw celebrated the 150th anniversary of the birth of Adam Mickiewicz.
