Yet the question lingers: ‘What really caused the catastrophe, and is it what the show is hinting at?’. Through its many subplots, the creators of the Netflix series gave plenty of space to conspiracy theories, suggesting a neat, hidden solution to the Heweliusz mystery. Big spoiler: it doesn’t exist.
Decades of research – books, podcasts, hours of YouTube deep dives, countless interviews with witnesses and officials, combing through every public and private document – point to a far messier reality. The disaster was never the result of a single secret, but a perfect storm (sic!) of factors: atrocious weather, lax or poorly followed procedures, a ferry in far from optimal condition, and a crew, under extreme pressure, making a string of less-than-ideal decisions.
Not exactly a cinematic twist, right? So let’s go ahead and rapidly debunk the four ‘how’ theories the series puts forward.
1. The third officer’s secret
Fiction: Witold, the Third Officer, carries a dark secret and ultimately takes his own life in the epilogue.
Fact: The real Third Officer, Janusz Lewandowski, did not commit suicide. He endured harassment and humiliation in court for his lack of formal education, but he likely stayed silent out of fear – fear that anyone unfamiliar with the sea would misinterpret his words. His story is less tragic melodrama than a quiet struggle against misunderstanding and institutional pressure.
2. The missing German recording
Fiction: Captain Binter dies holding a ‘missing piece’ of a German radio recording that supposedly proves a conspiracy.
Fact: A recording from Radio Arkona does exist – but it is incomplete. The German authorities never released the full material, and some parts were likely deleted. The fragments that remain contain nothing revolutionary; no grand conspiracy lurks in the missing minutes.
3. The secret smuggling operation
Fiction: Some sort of secret cargo – arms or explosives – is implied to have caused the sinking.
Fact: Smuggling did happen on ferries in the 1990s, but experts are clear: it did not sink the Heweliusz. As one survivor dryly noted, a wagon of cabbage flips just as easily as a wagon of guns. The ferry may have been in a hurry, but why exactly remains unknown. Speculation about pressure from the Polish military is unsubstantiated.
4. Secret Services involvement
Fiction: Poland's Secret Services orchestrated a cover-up of the real causes.
Fact: Secret Services were, of course, tasked with investigating the catastrophe, and their early-1990s methods certainly resemble those we see on screen. But there is no publicly known evidence that they manipulated the legal investigation, coerced witnesses, or blackmailed anyone to protect the state or the ferry operator. Reality is bureaucratic, not cinematic.
What to make of it all
At the end of the day, Heweliusz is less about uncovering a neatly packaged truth than about immersing viewers in the texture of a moment in history. Its brilliance lies precisely in this tension between fact and fiction: the series doesn’t offer tidy resolutions because reality rarely does. The disaster itself, the lives it touched, and the institutional failures it exposed were messy, chaotic, and resistant to simplification. By compressing, amplifying, and sometimes inventing characters, the creators give us a lens through which to understand not just what happened, but how it felt to live through the events, and how a society remembers – or misremembers – its own past. The drama, the near-mythic figures, the imagined secrets, and the collisions of conscience and authority are all narrative devices designed to make that history legible, emotional, and enduring.
Ultimately, Heweliusz may be a series, but it is also a mirror. It reflects our fascination with truth, our appetite for drama, and the ways in which history is filtered through memory, ethics, and imagination. The show’s fictional choices are not distortions – they are conduits, guiding us toward understanding a reality that is often too complex, too sorrowful, or too absurd to be captured in straightforward reportage. By walking that line, Heweliusz secures its place not only as a landmark in Polish television, but also as a meditation on how stories – both real and imagined – shape the way we remember, grieve, and make sense of the past.
