The remarkable Noble prize winner Maria Skłodowska-Curie is to be played by Karolina Gruszka in a new film, which will also star Daniel Olbrychski and Izabela Kuna. This joint production between Poland, Germany, France and Belgium will premiere in 2016.
"The film will be shot in Paris, Brussels, Munich and first of all in Poland: in Łódź, Kraków and Łeba. The Polish-German-Belgian-French team is scheduled to film in Poland for about 20 days", said the film’s promoter Anna E. Dziedzic.
Maria Skłodowska-Curie is the only woman to ever receive two Nobel Prizes. In 1903, together with Piotr Curie and physicist Henry Becquerel, she was presented with a Nobel Prize in Physics for her research on radioactivity. In 1911 she was awarded with a Nobel Prize in Chemistry “in recognition of her services to the advancement of chemistry by the discovery of the elements radium and polonium, by the isolation of radium and the study of the nature and compounds of this remarkable element”.
Polish Pokromski Studio is the producer of Maria Skłodowska-Curie (working title), while P'Artisan Filmproduktion (Germany), Sepia Production (France) and Climax Films (Belgium) co-produce. The project was financially supported by the Polish Film Institute. The producers announced that the film will be:
A story about an extraordinary woman who was forced to leave Poland to fulfil her legend and to become a world famous scientist. Emotional, dramatic and touching cinema, and trip in time to the Paris of the turn of the centuries, abundant in great academic visions, unfulfilled love, intrigue and betrayal.
As producer Mikołaj Pokromski stressed, it won’t be:
maria skłodowska curie
“another retrospective of the impressive life and academic achievements of Maria Skłodowska-Curie” but “the first such intimate portrait of this extraordinary woman. It will be a story about her ups and downs, moments of triumph and failure, not simply in the field of science, but also in her private, family life.”
The film will feature, among others, Karolina Gruszka as Maria Skłodowska-Curie, Daniel Olbrychski as Emile Amagat, a fervent opponent of Maria, and Izabela Kuna as Bronisława Skłodowska, Maria’s sister. The cast also consists of foreign actors, like Andre Wilms and Charles Berling (France) and Sabin Tambrea and Samuel Finzi (Germany).
The production will be directed by Marie Noelle from France while Pole Michał Englert will take care of cinematography.
