Call Me Marianna tells the touching story of the transsexual Marianne, who at the age of 40 decides to have a sex reassignment surgery. In order to accept herself, she has to abandon everything she has – the love of her parents, wife and children, as nobody accepts her decision. The director explained in Wysokie Obcasy magazine:
This film (…) is not an outcome of observations, but of the relations that emerged between us. Her life has become a part of my life. It is her fight for acceptancy, love and dignity in which I took part.
Thanks to the close relationship between Bielawska and the protagonist, the film came out to be something more than a powerful story about transsexualism and intolerance. Call Me Marianna recalls battlefield reports, where the object at issue is dignity, truthfulness and the freedom to define one’s own identity. The emotionally-moving film is the true winner at the 50th Kraków Film Festival. Its author also gained several prizes at festivals in Locarno, Lisbon, Saint Petersburg, Kyiv and Los Angeles.
The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is devoted to documentary films. It was founded at the initiative of Nancy Buirsky, a producer and documentary film director, and has taken place in Durnham NC since 1988. Artists awarded at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival are qualified to fight for the most prestigious awards among documentary films – the Producers Guild Awards and the Oscars.
A full list of the awarded films can be found on the official Full Frame Fest webpage.
