Białysztuk is a forum for presenting the artistic achievements ofyoung, independent theatre groups (and theatre creators) from the Podlasieregion in Poland, as well as invited foreign troupes. The aim of theinitiators of the festival is to allow the Białystok audience a widercontact with contemporary theatre (not just stage plays), both fromhome and abroad.
It began in 2005 when a group of graduated students of BiałystokTheatre Academy, gathered under a sign - the board of the ArtisticPromotion Society. They wanted to start a cyclical event that wasmeant to provoke a social dialogue, wake up theatrical fascinations, promote young artists. So "Białysztuk" was created. In a couple ofyears the festival became a ground for independent artistic activity, dynamically developing in Białystok.
Early performances of **in:Kompania Doomsday*in_te_kompania_doomsday** and "Akcja DZRT" were shown in the first editions of the festival. The next editions gavepossibilities to present the newer achievements of young artists fromBiałystok, such as performances of **dz:Baldanders** by Malabar HotelTheatre, **dz:Murdas. The Tale** by Grupa Coincidentia or **dz:Fizjotopia** byKolegtyw Theatre.
The goal of the organizers is not only to present the local artisticinitiatives, but most of all to confront it with creative works fromPoland and abroad. Białysztuk was a place to present performances byEuropean groups like: Figurentheater Wilde & Vogel from Germany,Playground, Hnos Oligor from Spain, Czech Teatr Novogo Fronta and thePolish **in:Porywacze Ciał*in_te_porywacze_cial** and Małe Instrumenty. Between 2007 and 2009, the festival was part of the SONE project, supported by UE program ofCulture 2007-2013, whose goal was to integrate the European artisticgroups in the area of visual theatre and puppetry.
An important point of the festival's program is the public reading ofcontemporary dramas and discussions with their authors. Theparticipants of the events are drama writers: **os:Krzysztof Bizio*os_bizio_krzysztof**, **os:Tomasz Man*os_man_tomasz**, **os:Michał Walczak*os_walczak_michal**, **os:Paweł Jurek*os_jurek_pawel**, **os:Artur Pałyga*os_palyga_artur**. The goals of themeetings are making the audience familiar with contemporary dramaissues and promotion of Polish drama. But Białysztuk is not onlyfocused on theatre, but also concerts, exhibitions and animations.
The festival usually also features a number of concerts with jazz andprogressive rock at the forefront. Among the major musical eventsshown during the festival in the past there were performances by Polish bandPogodno, **os:Maria Peszek*os_peszek_maria** on stage with the band Elektrolot, and the first female percussion group in Poland – Mamatucada (Wrocław).
One of the most interesting edition of the festival was the ninth"Białysztuk" (June 25-29, 2009), subtitled Colchis (a reference to themythical-historical land on the Black Sea coast). The European Unionsupported a two-year grant from an international project called"Sone", which was a joint initiative between Schaubude (Berlin), andthe Association for the Promotion of Art and the Doomsday Troupe(Białystok), Figurentheater Lilarum (Vienna) and Figurentheater Wilde& Vogel (Leipzig). Its name means the geographical diagonal, representation of an axis that runs from the south-west to thenorth-east, across Europe.
During the jubilee edition of "Białysztuk" (November 3-7, 2010) thefestival hosted the world premières of **os:Witkiewicz*os_stanislaw_ignacy_witkiewicz**'s **dz:Mother** by theBiałystok-based Malabar Hotel Theatre, directed by Hendrik Mannes fromGermany, **dz:Night coming from inside** by Robert Drobniucha's KolegtywTheatre, as well as the Polish première of the internationalco-production by three troupes (Grupa Coincidentia from Białystok,Leipzig Figurentheater Wilde & Vogel and Florian Feisel from Berlin)entitled **dz:Krabat**, directed by Christiane Zanger.
