Art of Freedom is one of the films falling under the Guide to the Poles series, presenting the phenomenon of creativity and freedom in Poland. This particular episode tells the story of Polish himalayan mountaneeiring in the 1970s and 80s. In the hard times of the PRL era, the Poles would venture on costly expeditions into Himalayas, which earned them the opinion of some of the top mountaneeirs worldwide.
The success of Art of Freedom wasn't the only Polish accent at the VI Bilbao Mendi Film Festival. Visitors to this event, gathering the amateurs of mountains and films devoted to them, had the opportunity to view the exhibition made up of storyboards of the Lodowi wojownicy (Ice Fighters) and The Lho La Tragedy: Beginning of the End graphic novels - both of which tell stories of the Polish mounaneeirs and their challenging expeditions.
The festival audience also had the opportunity to meet up with Bernadette McDonald, a Canadian author of the well-known and widely awarded book Freedom Climbers, which describes the greatest achievements of the Polish himalaists.
The Best Script Award at the Bilbao Mendi Film Festival marks yet another victory of the Słota and Kłosowicz film . Previously, Art of Freedom was awarded at events such as the Cervino CineMountain Festival, Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival, and the 9th Cracow Mountain Film Festival. The production has also been noticed by the jury at festivals in Kathmandu, Chicago, or Domzale in Slovenia.
