Wolski has worked in American cinema for over forty years. He left for New York in 1979, as a student of the renowned Łódź Film School. He was just 23 years old and had not finished his studies. He did so in the States, where he went on to become cinematography’s shining star.
His work on Romeo Is Bleeding from 1993 became his ticket to big-time cinema. Although you may not know his name, you surely know his movies: he did the cinematography for the wildly popular Gore Verbinski Pirates of the Caribbean movies and Tim Burton’s smash hits Alice in Wonderland and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Wolski is currently director Ridley Scott’s favourite cinematographer (before that, he had worked with Ridley’s brother Tony Scott) and worked with him, among others, on The Martian with Matt Damon and All the Money in the World with Christopher Plummer.

News of the World, made with outstanding director Paul Greengrass, is a favourite of this year's Oscar race. It is, at the moment, one of Netflix's largest film productions and proof of its growing power in the industry. News of the World tells the story of a Civil War veteran who travels the Wild West earning his living by reading the headlines for those who ‘don’t have the time’. On his way, he comes across a girl who, as it turns out, was taken by the Kiowa people years before and he vows to take her home. They travel hundreds of miles and face grave dangers as they search for a place that either can call home.
Together, Greengrass and Wolski take this seemingly simple story and turn it into a powerful road movie – a story about shaping identity. The beautifully filmed movie turns out to be something more than ‘just another Western’ and is another great success of Wolski’s cinematography. Watch the trailer for the film below:
Dariusz Wolski was the only Polish artist to be nominated for the 2021 Oscars. The Academy Award ceremony will take place on 25th April 2021.
