Projects by Moldovan students created during Studio Malafor’s Observatory workshops will be presented in Łódź Design Festival and in Chisinau.
The 2nd edition of the Kashubian Malafor Studio’s Observatory workshops took place in the summer of 2016. The group of invited participants consisted of 8 individuals, mainly students of the Technical University of Moldova in Chisinau, who spent more than a week working under the watchful eyes of the Malafor group’s founders Agata Kulik-Pomorska and Paweł Pomorski. The young designers worked on prototypes of objects referring to the workshop’s main theme: Recipe = Tradition + Usefulness.
The event's organisers wrote:
In an era of overproduction, the issue of responsibility is becoming more and more urgent, not only in Western Europe. The Moldovan students looked for recipes for projects which use natural materials relating to the tradition of their homeland and inspired by the concept of locality. The project’s leaders wanted to extract the potential from the emerging proposals and to encourage participants to perceive their own strengths in the context of indigenous cultural and economic realities. With vineyards occupying one tenth of Moldova’s total area, the country’s tradition is inseparably linked with wine.
The workshop’s participants chose winemaking as the main theme of the Observatory. The Moldovan students created various kitchen and table accessories, for example, shoes for pressing grapes made from planks of a one-hundred-year-old wine barrel.
The results of the workshop will be presented in the autumn of 2016 in exhibitions in Poland (Łódź Design Festival, from 13th September to 23rd 2016) and in Moldova during November and December on the following dates:
- 24th Nov – 11th Dec: 110 Dosoftei Street, ap.1-3, Chisinau (10am–8pm)
- 12th – 17th Dec: Hotel Radisson Blu, 77 Mitropolit Varlaam Street, Chisinau
Agata Kulik-Pomorska and Paweł Pomorski founded Malafor Studio, which typically designs industrial objects, furniture and various consumer products. They received a Red Dot award for the first of their Blow Sofa series. Furthermore, the same year they were awarded with a prestigious international IF Design Award.
