Striking Photos of Warsaw from Above
Through Blogusz's lens the capital looks majestic and sometimes surprising. The young photographer takes pictures of Warsaw from rooftops, top floors and planes.
Aleksandra Łogusz, professionally known as Blogusz, photographs Warsaw from above because from this perspective she can show the city as a modern, vibrant metropolis. Indeed, in her photos Warsaw looks proud and promising – like in the picture she took from the roof of a Warsaw skyscraper on Jerozolimskie Avenue. She admits that visiting rooftops isn’t just for fun.
"The procedure of getting on a roof is usually long. Roofs aren’t observation towers, so it can even take a few months before I get the necessary agreements and even when I do, the weather can change my plans and everything starts all over again. It takes a lot of patience but luckily people who visit my website and order prints appreciate the effort ” Blogusz says.
One of her best-known photos, entitled Sen o Warszawie/A Dream of Warsaw shows Warsaw’s downtown looking from the north. This picture was deemed Picture of the Year 2014 by a Polish magazine. To Blogusz, this image captures the quintessence of modern Warsaw, which she describes as a city where thousands of people come each year looking for a better future that may be as distant as the skyscrapers at the end of the street in the photograph. Blogusz knows what it’s like to move to Warsaw, because she herself relocated to this city two and a half years ago; her hometown is Bielsko-Biała. In Warsaw she often worked as a journalist or event manager on weekends and had days off in the middle of the week, when everyone else would be busy. She decided that on lonely days away from work she would photograph Warsaw from rooftops, high floors, and other places that aren’t necessarily easily accessible. She posted her photos on the Internet and eventually gained popularity as a photographer. Now she works exclusively in that capacity.
Sometimes photographing Warsaw from unusual perspectives leads to surprising results. In her picture Morskie fale Alei Jerozolimskich/The Sea Waves of Jerozolimskie Avenue, she makes a major Warsaw street look like a waving sea or a water slide. In another photo by Blogusz, one that was taken from a plane, the capital looks like a picturesque village neighbouring a highway. Nevertheless, even in her surprising pictures the city looks attractive. The way in which Aleksandra portrays Warsaw was appreciated by the Office of the Śródmieście District of the Capital City of Warsaw, which published a calendar featuring one of her photos. Some of her works have been published in a book on Warsaw skyscrapers titled Złota 44 i inne warszawskie niebotyki/Złota 44 and Other Warsaw High-Rises. Blogusz recently opened her web page where she posts and sells her pictures and writes her blog. Since 2014 she has been posting her photos on her Facebook page.
