Living Archives: Third Edition of Digital Cultures
On the 26th and 27th September, Kino Iluzjon in Warsaw will change into a space of inspiring meetings between creators and audiences of digital culture. The conference programme includes established artists, producers, curators, practitioners and theorists from all over the world.
Digital Cultures invites you to attend talks, panel discussions, presentations, workshops and VR showcases to learn about the best projects from Poland and abroad. During the event, we’ll investigate new tech phenomena, and their social and cultural dimension, as well as the effect they have on our perception of history.
The main focus of this year’s edition lies in living archives, and the way technological development allows us to rediscover heritage. The arrival of new tech solutions in digitalization of cultural resources changed our approach to how we re-use existing content. New technology created space for free interpretation of meanings and traditions set in specific social and cultural contexts.

Archives have gained a flexible form, and their users – an unlimited access to their resources. Gathering and processing archival data relies AI-based solutions. Is it then apt to call open digital databases ‘archives’? We’ll look into these changes, their positive and negative aspects, as well as the efficient use of the current phenomena in promoting cultural heritage, and engaging your audiences.
Anna Szylar, the head of the programmers’ team explains:
Digital Cultures is not meant to be a place for tech news, and Silicon Valley inventions. It’s a place where different perspectives on digital cultures collide. It gives the stage to the best creators, producers, and representatives of established institutions, directors of festivals and curators, all of whom explore the creative potential of new tech in their work. I believe that the variety of perspectives, and the interdisciplinarity are the greatest strengths of the conference.
The objective of the event held annually by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute since 2017 is to present the most curious changes in Polish digital culture, and creating a platform for establishing international relations, and experience sharing. That’s why apart from panel discussions, there will also be individual consultations with experts. Additionally, the participants will be able to download the Digital Cultures app, which will make networking easier and more efficient.
The Best of Poland section will give the audience an opportunity to see twenty most thought-provoking projects by Polish digital artists, and to look into how these creators function in the international environment, what their unique qualities are, what makes them stand out, what their perception of media is, and how they employ them in their work.
Among the confirmed speakers at the event are Gerfried Stocker (Art Director of Ars Electronica), Frank Cifaldi (director of the Video Game History Foundation), Josh Hadro (director of the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF Consortium), and Joseph Cutts (a programmer of the Alternate Realities section at Sheffield Doc Fest up to 2019), as well as artists such as Constant Dullart, Alexey Furman, May Abdalla (Anagram), Maciek Szczerbowski, Chris Lavis and Brigitte Henry (Clyde Henry Productions), as well as producer Dana Dansereau of the National Film Board of Canada, which together with Felix&Paul Studios, and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute produced a VR stop motion animation Gymnasia. It premiered during this year’s Tribeca festival in New York City.
Between the 17th and the 19th of October the event will have its first edition abroad: Digital Cultures Lviv. It will be launched as part of the Ukrainian Tetramatyka festival.
