The Malabar Hotel Theatre first came into being in September 2009. It emerged from the independent theatre group Kompania Doomsday, which, after five years of activity, has stopped giving premiers and has instead handed part of its repertoire over to two new groups. Having had its activities shadowed by its parent theatre company, Malabar Hotel has now begun a three-fold repertoire: Baldanders, The Biting and Bits and Pieces.
The name 'Malabar Hotel' itself, however, is an allusion to Witkacy. The troupe's work draws heavily from the philosophy of this Polish dramatist. They are primarily interested in form - as understood by Witkacy, as well as by puppetry and the visual arts. Around this centre there are other theatrical elements in orbit, which have since come to characterize the group's performances.
Malabar Hotel will continue to produce plays based on the works of authors such as Marcin Bartnikowski and Marcin Bikowski, whilst also inviting different directors and set designers to work with them. Bartnikowski's Alice? directed by Bikowski, premiered on November 21, 2009. The next premiere was a performance based on Witkacy's Mother in the stage version of German director Hendrik Mannes, took place on October 17, 2010 in Warsaw's Sen Pszczoły bar and club.
The group's creators call Malabar a "mixture of yearning for an unknown, Witkacy-esque absurdism, as well as our own theatrical wishes that we hope audiences will see grow, but never fully mature".
