The works of 22 artists at the "Rearview Mirror" exhibition turn both into the past and future. Jointly they controvert the generally accepted concepts of treating Eastern Europe as a social, political and artistic monolith. In attempt to reverse the stereotypes affecting the art in this region, the curators have planned an exhibition as a sort of introductory experiment and try to engage a dialogue about post-communist Europe
The exhibition presents the work of young artists from Central and Eastern Europe, highlighing the achievements of young artists such as Ciprian Mureşan, Gintaras Didžiapetris and Anna Molska alongside pieces from artists already well-known in the international art circuit - Paweł Althamer, Roman Ondáka and Wilhelm Sasnal.
In the mirror of my carI suddenly saw
the huge block of the cathedral in Beauvais;
great things live in small things
for an instant.
- Adam Zagajewski, "Auto mirror" from the volume "To go to Lvov", 1985.
This becomes apparent through the selection of work consisting of different media: from videos, installations and performances to sculptures and paintings. It presents such artists as Ciprian Mureşan, Gintaras Didžiapetris and Anna Molska along with artists already well known in the international art sphere: Paweł Althamer, Roman Ondáka and Wilhelm Sasnal.
