Volume of poetry by an outstanding Polish poet...
This is the volume of poetry by an outstanding Polish poet. "It would be pointless trying to search for signs of rebellion against the world or against the prevalent literary system in Julia Hartwig's poetry," a critic writes in 2001. "Quite on the contrary, this poet is not interested in looking for new means of expression or breaking the standards and conventions of style. Also she fully accepts the world as it is, since there is and will be no other world. By applying all the known and available artistic means, Julia Hartwig writes poems whose composition is clear and logical. The invariable subject of her poetry is the world, colossal and undescribed, the world which every day we have a chance to observe."
Julia Hartwig (b. 1921), distinguished poet, essayist, and translator. She has published only a few volumes of poetry, but they have given her an important place in contemporary Polish literature. She defies clear-cut categorisation and commands a position on her own, not subject to trends and fads of the arts.
