As part of the Summing Up series at the Zachęta National Gallery this month, presenting the highlights of Poland's 2011 EU Presidency and workshops based around the main themes of the cultural calendar, the museum presents screenings of a documentary series devoted to the Polish character
Guide to the Poles welcomes viewers into a remarkable cinematic journey into the roots of the contemporary phenomenon of freedom and creativity in Poland. In spite of prevailing stereotypes, the socialist era in Poland was not just about oppression, poverty and subjection. It was just as much a time of attaining tenable freedoms in unexpected areas of life. Through child's play, fashion, music and even mountain climbing - Poles learned to overcome adversity through culture, sport and entertainment, using their creativity to overcome the drabness of socialism.
