Judgement in Cardiff is an exhibition devoted to Judge Dredd, one of the most popular British comic book heroes. The exhibition includes work from 21, mostly British, artists, including Carlos Ezquerry – the first illustrator of Judge Dredd, Jock (Batman. The Black Mirror), Glen Fabry (Slane), Simon Bisley (Lobo), as well as the original script by John Wagner, Dredd’s co-creator. The exhibition will also feature conceptual artwork by Przemek Trust Truściński, prepared especially for the occasion.
The displayed works all show the futuristic world of Dredd. We wanted to show the diversity of styles in which this character has been drawn. Most boards come from comics published in the magazine 2000 AD, but we also feature pages from Judge Anderson Psi Division. We’ve also made a special place for Przemek Truściński – explains the curator of the exhibit, Bartosz Nowicki.
“I’ve always drawn fantasy well and in my work I always create fantastic worlds. Dredd is permanently inscribed in the global pantheon of superheroes and so it was a great pleasure for me to draw my own version especially for the exhibition in Cardiff,” – explains Przemek Truściński.
The exhibition will show mostly original artwork, which is rare when the work is to be printed. The exhibition will run from 2 to 16 August 2015 at the Third Floor Gallery in Cardiff (102 Bute Street). The opening will be held 1 August 2015 at 19.00.
Judge Dredd is the most popular British comic book hero. He made his debut in 1977 in the second issue of the British magazine 2000 AD. The character is created by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra. Dredd is a futuristic officer of the law – a street judge, who pursues criminals and inflicts ad hoc justice. His catchphrase - 'I am the law!' - has become a permanent element of pop culture. The Dredd comics became the groundwork for two feature films and many computer and fantasy games.
