The exhibition is presented at the largest design event in Brazil, the DW! São Paulo Design Weekend between the 15th and 18th August. It is a continuation of The Spirit of Poland project, which started out as an independent initiative of Polish designers. Its aim is to present the growing potential and original value of the dynamic Polish brands in an international forum.
The Spirit of Poland promotes Polish trademarks at strategic design events across the globe by engaging Polish designers as well as the founders of Poland’s brands in the industry. It encourages cooperation between designers, institutions and the media. The exhibitions in The Spirit of Poland series bring together the young generation of creators who are making design a living means for promoting and sharing Polish creative talent.
The key for selection for the 2013 edition of the event was emphasis on the spirit and "soul" of materials employed in the objects under consideration. The presented objects explore a relationship arising between designers and their materials through items that served as a starting point for creative processes. The exhibition presents handmade products, such as jewellery created out of coal – an item that is the result of cooperation between young Polish architects and local manufacturers and an exchange of their know-how.
On the other hand, it also presents objects that were designed with the use of digital technologies, such as a laser plotter and miller. Among these selections are products made from sheets of steel or plastic. Their form reflects the designers' fascination with the substances and an immediate relationship between the initial idea, the human hand and the material itself.
The first edition of the The Spirit of Poland was organised with the cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Japan and took place as part of Tokyo Designers Week 2010. It was then presented at the National Opera in Warsaw in 2011. With the support of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, the exhibition then travelled to the 100% Design exhibition in London and to the Tokyo Designers Week in 2011.
The presentation of The Spirit of Poland in São Paulo is the fifth edition of the event. It constitutes a part of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute’s programme for promoting Polish design abroad.
